THE HORNELL, NEW YORK NATIVE JOINED THE STATE POLICE IN OCTOBER OF 2000 AND GRADUATED FROM THE ACADEMY IN MAY 2001. An overpass in Schroon Lake has been renamed in honor of a state trooper killed in the line of duty more than 20 years ago, and On Thursday, New York State Police and the Schroon Lake community came together to pay tribute to their fallen local hero.The overpass on Charley Hill Road over I-87 in the Town of Schroon will now be known as the Trooper Lawrence P. Gleason Memorial Bridge. On February 11th, 2002, Trooper Gleason was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence incident in Crown Point. Gleason, a native of Hornell, New York, joined the state police in October 2000 and graduated from the academy in May 2001. Despite his brief tenure with the NYSP, his fellow officers remember the 28-year-old's dedicated service to the state.Commander Brent Davis of NYSP Troop B remarked, “His sacrifice will never be forgotten. He risked and ultimately laid down his life to protect our freedom, defend our values, and uphold the rule of law.”State Senator Dan Stec and Assemblymember Matt Simpson sponsored the legislation to rename the bridge, serving as a poignant reminder of the risks faced by those in uniform. “We need to pause and just recognize that these guys and women that put on the uniform to serve and protect us every day, they never know what's going to happen,” said Senator Stec. Gleason's family members expressed that the bridge will help them continue to honor his name for generations to come. Shannon Gleason, Trooper Lawrence Gleason's sister, said, “The honor and remembrance of who Larry was and of what happened to him will carry on long after our family and the troopers that work with him are no longer here to tell his story.”
