Luka Mijatovic's 200 IM Breakthrough: 1:44.28 at 16 Years Old (2025)

Luka Mijatovic's Swimming Odyssey: Unlocking New Frontiers in the Pool

A young swimming prodigy is making waves, and his journey is about to get even more exciting!

Luka Mijatovic, the swimming sensation, continues to astound as he expands his aquatic repertoire. At the Pleasanton Seahawks SC Senior 2 meet, held from November 7th to 9th, 2025, in Pleasanton, CA, Mijatovic showcased his versatility in the pool.

After an electrifying 1000-yard freestyle performance on Friday, clocking an astonishing 8:37.01 (#5 all-time), he dove into the 200-yard individual medley (IM) and 100-yard butterfly on Saturday, setting new personal bests in both events.

In the 200 IM final, Mijatovic's time of 1:44.28 outshone his teammate Tim Wu (1:46.41). This achievement is even more remarkable considering it surpassed his previous personal best of 1:45.67, set before his transition to long-course training for the summer. Notably, these improvements came in events outside his primary freestyle specialty.

But here's where it gets intriguing:

Analyzing his splits reveals a fascinating story:

| Split | New PB | Old PB | Difference |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Backstroke | 22.56 | 22.80 | -0.24 |
| Breaststroke | 26.31 | 27.11 | -0.80 |
| Butterfly | 30.75 | 31.30 | -0.55 |
| Freestyle | 24.66 | 24.46 | +0.20 |
| Total Time | 1:44.28 | 1:45.67 | -1.39 |

This performance catapulted Mijatovic to 9th place all-time in the 15-16 age group, just ahead of Wu. And that's not all—he also set a new personal best in the 100 fly prelims with a time of 47.54, ranking him 52nd all-time in the age group.

Mijatovic's strategic race selection is worth noting. He opted to scratch the 100 fly final in favor of the 200-yard freestyle, which he won with a time of 1:34.74, just shy of his lifetime best.

As we look ahead to 2027, when Mijatovic joins the University of Texas to train under the legendary Bob Bowman, the best men's IM coach in history, one can't help but wonder: Will this partnership unlock Mijatovic's full potential in the IM events?

The young athlete was scheduled to compete in multiple events on Sunday, including the 500 free, 200 fly, 100 free, and 100 back, but he may strategically scratch some races.

And the excitement didn't end with Mijatovic.

The meet witnessed exceptional performances from other young talents. Daniela Linares Danzos, just 15 years old, claimed victory in the 200-yard backstroke with a new personal best of 1:54.32, a significant improvement from her previous best at Winter Juniors. This achievement places her as the fastest 15-16-year-old in the country this season and among the top 60 all-time.

Maddie Thornton, a Georgia commit from the Bend Swim Club in Oregon, also shone, taking second place with a best time of 1:54.92 in the same event. This time surpasses her previous best from Sectionals and showcases her remarkable progress.

Thornton also secured second place in the 50 free (23.13) and won the 200 free (1:48.80), both near her personal bests.

Linares Danzos demonstrated her versatility by swimming a best time in the 200 IM prelims (2:04.23) before an unfortunate disqualification in the finals. She also claimed victory in the 100 fly with a time of 55.09.

Other standout performances:

  • Tim Wu, a Cal commit, dominated the 200 back with a new lifetime best of 1:42.55, making him the fastest 17-year-old in the country this season by a significant margin.
  • Jordan Ragland, another Cal commit from Life Time Northern California, won the boys' 50 free in 20.02, a promising time considering his recent performances.

As we follow Mijatovic's journey and the achievements of these young swimmers, one question lingers: What new heights will they reach in the world of competitive swimming? The future looks bright, and the pool awaits their next splash.
