Biography

He was born on August 13, 1951, in Peoria, Illinois, USA, as Daniel Grayling Fogelberg.

His mother was an amateur opera singer, while his father had led big bands. Dan said in a later interview: ”My upbringing made me think that real legitimate music is written, not heard.”

By the time he was 13, Fogelberg was in a band called ”the Clan.”

In 1969, he graduated from Woodruff High School. During high school, Dan was part of a band called ”The Coachmen.” Later, he went to the University of Illinois to study acting and art.

Dan left the University of Illinois in 1971 and moved to California.

In the early 70s, Fogelberg performed as an opening act for Van Morrison.

In 1972, Dan released his debut album, titled – ”Home Free.” The album was produced by Norbert Putnam.

In 1974, Fogelberg released his 2nd album, called – ”Souvenirs,” via Epic Records. It peaked at #17 on the Billboard 200. The album was followed by Captured Angel in 1975.

In 1977, Dan released an album called ”Nether Lands.” In the follow-up year, Tim Weisberg and Fogelberg released the album ”Twin Sons of Different Mothers.” The song ”The Power of Gold” peaked at #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In 1976, the singer released the album ”Phoenix.”

In 1981, Fogelberg released another album, entitled – ”The Innocent Age.” It was inspired by Thomas Wolfe’s novel ”Of Time and the River.” The song ”Hard to Say” from this album was written by Dan while he was recovering from surgery.

Fogelberg died on December 16, 2007, in Deer Isle, Maine.He had been battling prostate cancer since May 2004. He was 56.

”Dan left us this morning at 6:00 a.m,” according to a statement on his website. The statements also read: ”He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side.”

”I am saddened today with the news of Dan’s passing,” said Richie Furay, a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

He added: ”He was a wonderful person who touched many people with his unique talent of communicating the songs in his heart to such a large audience.

Dan Fogelberg’s remains were not buried but instead were cremated, and his ashes were scattered over the Atlantic Oceanoff the coast of Maine.
